2014 Communicator of the Year – Michael Lovell, Former UW-Milwaukee chancellor and Marquette University president-electmike lovell
Dr. Lovell was chosen for his leadership over the past year, as well as during his time as chancellor at UW-Milwaukee, in efforts related to positioning Milwaukee as an emerging hub for innovation and entrepreneurial activity. More specifically, he was recognized for his ongoing work communicating and building partnerships among academic and business circles to advance a number of initiatives, including:

  • Construction of UWM’s Innovation Campus in Wauwatosa
  • Expansion of the university’s School of Freshwater Sciences; and
  • Construction of the Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Complex

Dr. Lovell has proven to be an effective leader on these fronts, and in doing so has advanced the important message – both publicly and privately among business and academic leaders – that Milwaukee and SE Wisconsin is evolving, it’s innovating and there is an exciting future on the horizon.

Colleen, who passed away in April of 2014, was honored post mortem with this award for her impact on the PR community of Milwaukee.  After earning a Journalism degree from Marquette, Colleen began her career as a news editor at WTMJ 4. She then worked out of state in several positions for 7 years. In 1992, Colleen returned to Wisconsin and opened Emerald Isle. Through the years, Emerald Isle won many Paragon awards. In 2012, her agency took the best of show in Paragons awards competition. Colleen served as a board member for both PRSA and Women in Communications.
