October Meeting Notice
Online Editors: What They Want and Don’t Want

The definitions of “news” and “media” are rapidly changing thanks to the online revolution. Audiences today rely more and more on new forms of communications such as e-mail news bulletins, instantly updated Web sites, RSS (Really Simple Syndication), blogs and podcasts. Online media often require different content, deadlines and editorial decision-making than traditional media outlets, such as print and broadcast. Therefore, online media opportunities bring new challenges for today's PR professionals.

To be successful with these new media, PR professionals need to think creatively about how these online outlets can impact their PR efforts. This is true in Wisconsin, where audiences are increasingly well-served by strong, interactive media outlets. The top editors at three major interactive media outlets in the state will join us to discuss their media environments and how PR professionals should work with their organizations. Panelists will include:

- Mike Davis, Editor, JSOnline/Journal Interactive
- Jeff Mayers, President, wispolitics.com and wisbusiness.com
- Jeff Sherman, President and Co-Owner, OnMilwaukee.com

In Case You Missed It

Diamond Day of Summer

What does it take to shape a Silver Anvil winning program? CKPR’s Senior Vice President and Managing Director Joel Curran spoke at the August 17 chapter luncheon about how CKPR created and implemented a winning program.

The program, Diamonds in the Rough, created for Briggs & Stratton, is a community service program that builds brand awareness through grassroots efforts. A copy of the PowerPoint presentation Curran gave is available to PRSA members through the www.prsawis.org/ Web site.

Ethical Public Relations: Take the Pillow Test

Alan L. Gaudynski, APR, Ethics Officer for Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter, PRSA

September is Ethics Month for PRSA members. That doesn't mean we should act in an unethical manner during the other 11 months of the year.

In a perfect world, every organization would have and practice a code of ethical conduct. Every member of the organization – including leaders, employees, constituents, clients and other stakeholders – would have a clearly defined set of expectation from the organization and those it serves. It should be right up on the wall in the lobby next to the organization's mission statement.

Ethics is the system of moral values, the principle of right or good conduct. In recent years, some of our leaders in government and business have shaken the very foundation of this value system. In the wake of these missteps, our country has done some serious soul-searching and is emphasizing a renewed expectation that acting ethically is the vital responsibility of any leader.

Chris Bauer, a national speaker on ethics in business, estimates American businesses lose as much as 6% of gross revenues to ethical problems. Cheating on expense accounts, using preferred over-priced consultants, kickbacks and thievery are only a few examples of what constitutes this 6% figure.

More than 2,500 years ago, the famous Greek physician Hippocrates spelled out for doctors their first responsibility is primum non nocere… "above all, not knowingly do harm."

A PRSA Member to Know

...Eric Vallee

From 9 to 5 p.m. he’s a communications director for one of Milwaukee’s largest non-profit organizations, and after 5 o’clock, you can find him perfecting his comedy routine.

You can catch Eric Vallee, director of communications for the American Heart Association and co-chair of the chapter’s professional development committee, at Jokerz Comedy Club in Milwaukee Wednesday nights, when the comedy club hosts open-mic night.

From lousy dating tips to life’s embarrassing moments to funny observations, Vallee covers it all throughout his routine. Several of the comedian’s jokes during a recent routine proved too risque for mention in this article, but next time Eric is at a meeting, ask him whether or not he likes cats.

Other clubs Vallee has performed include Juz Jokkin’ in Waukegan, Ill.; Riddles in Chicago; Comedy on State Street in Madison, Wis.; The Dells Comedy Club in Wisconsin Dells; and Giggle’s Comedy Pub in Milwaukee. For more information about his routine, contact eric.vallee@heart.org
