Top 3 PR Articles of the Week: Friday, May 23, 2014

As PR professionals, it’s typical that working with the media is in our job description. For some of us this might be a daily occurrence but for others, media interactions might be few and far between. Therefore, this week’s Top 3 PR Articles focus on the dos and don’ts of interacting with the media. (Actually, the ‘Shark Tank’ article isn’t necessarily about working with the media but I thought many of these ideas could pertain to pitching media stories). Enjoy!

Chapter position: Paragon Awards co-chairJess Kulas
Current position: PR account executive at BVK

What’s the craziest thing you’ve had to do for work? I had to cascade down a series of waterfalls with a group of journalists in the Dominican Republic. For someone who is terrified of heights it wasn’t an easy task to keep it together in front of the media, but it was something I’ll never forget.

What social media outlets do you use? Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. I probably have an unhealthy Pinterest addiction.

What’s your favorite part about living and working in Southeastern Wisconsin? With the exception of the brutal winters, Wisconsin has so much to offer. From the festivals and arts scene, to the array of restaurants and sporting events, it has something for everyone. The nice thing about working in the PR/communications industry here is that it makes the city feel smaller in a certain sense. There are a variety of networking opportunities, and you never feel like you get lost in the shuffle as you would in larger cities.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Southeastern Wisconsin? Ann’s Italian Restaurant in Hales Corners. Their pizza is out of this world.

What’s the best vacation you’ve taken? I went to China and Thailand last year to visit my friend and her husband. Asia was never on my travel bucket list, but it was one of the most amazing experiences. I find it so exciting to learn about new cultures and indulge in the different cuisines. Let’s just say that their food is 100 times better than any of the food you’d get at a takeout Chinese restaurant in Milwaukee.

As I looked through the articles I set aside this week for this blog post, I noticed that one word was repeatedly jumping out at me; Millennial.

Someone is considered a Millennial, or part of Generation Y, if they were born roughly between 1980 and 2000, myself included. Right now, that’s anyone between the age of 14 and 34. This group is tech savvy, civic minded and has extreme purchasing power (important information for anyone trying to communicate to or sell to this group). Therefore, this week’s Top 3 PR Articles focus on the Millennial Generation and what we can do to attract them.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve had to do for work? “Shovel” out a snowed in and iced over door with a small car ice scraper at 5 a.m. in early February, stand outside for 4 hours helping girls sell cookies and then give TV news interviews while very cold and wet.

What social media outlets do you use? LinkedIn for business, Facebook for personal and Twitter for a little mix of both

What do you like to do outside of work? I ride horses at a barn in Richfield. I have learned both jumping and polo in the past two years!

What’s your favorite part about living and working in Southeastern Wisconsin? I love the variety here – of things to do, of industries that are present, of city and country – and the people!

What’s your favorite restaurant in Southeastern Wisconsin? Parkside 23 is one of my favorites.

Public relations experts typically wear many hats. Besides working on traditional public relations strategies or tactics, we may be asked to manage social media accounts, purchase advertising, draft a marketing campaign and more. So, it’s important that we all stay educated in a number of communication vehicles.

Many of us no longer consume news by watching TV or picking up a newspaper; we have the USA Today app on our phones. We don’t watch the new episode of Modern Family live; we DVR it so we can skip the commercials. To combat this way of consuming information and entertainment, many organizations are turning to digital advertising. Therefore, the week’s Top 3 PR Articles focuses on that exact topic.

As PR professionals, we are always trying to stay one step ahead for our clients and organizations when it comes to ways to communicate with our stakeholders. In an industry that is constantly evolving, this isn’t always the easiest thing to do.

It seems that the million dollar question is always, “what is the next big thing?” While it’s almost impossible to answer this question, this week’s top 3 PR articles of the week try to shed some light on that question by focusing on the future.

What do you find most beneficial about our chapter? I appreciate the opportunity to build my network by getting to know other area PR professionals of all ages and levels of experience. I also enjoy the monthly programs — great “shot in the arm” continuing education.

What do you like best about being a professional communicator? I’m one of those lucky people who has known what she’s wanted to do since sixth grade when I wrote for the only elementary school “newspaper” in the Milwaukee Public School district — I covered the office “beat.” Worked on school papers in junior and senior high and college. Summer college work study job was with the U. S. Forest Service’s Office of Public Information or the other side of the news story. I love being able to provide people — internal and external audiences — with important and beneficial information. Plus, how many other professions do you know pay you to stick your nose in other people’s business (in a respectful way, of course)?

What social media outlets do you use? I am personally on LinkedIn (established Facebook and Twitter profiles so I could be a backup administrator for WDA sites). The WDA is active on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, Pinterest and most recently established a presence on Instagram.

What do you like to do outside of work? My hobby is volunteering. For many years when my children were small, it was in the schools and with scouts. Now, my focus is on volunteering with the Southeastern Wisconsin PRSA Chapter (a past president, I’m a director at large on the board, board liaison to the Young Pros and a mentor in the YP mentor program). I also volunteer my time and talents to my church (Wauwatosa Avenue United Methodist Church), including publicity, strategic planning, ringing hand bells, baking muffins monthly for the St. James breakfast program in downtown Milwaukee and co-leading our three-times-a-year “Souper Sundays.”

What’s your favorite part about living and working in Southeastern Wisconsin? Believe it or not, I like the weather, because I like having four seasons. We also seem to be spared many of the major weather events pummeling other parts of the country. As a Wauwatosa resident, I’ve got the best of both worlds — small town amenities (e.g., good public schools and library, walkable community with a historic village area, unique local shopping/eateries) and big city benefits (e.g., career options, an easy drive a to wide variety of cultural and entertainment attractions, larger shopping options and world-class health care at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin to name just two).

Top 3 PR Articles of the Week: Friday, April 25, 2014

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock this week, I think it’s safe to assume that most PR professionals somehow heard about the New York Police Department’s hashtag promotion that didn’t go as planned.

While it was a good idea in theory, the plan to have people post photos of themselves with New York police officers with the hashtag #myNYPD quickly turned into a rash of photos that did not depict the department in a positive light.

As PR professionals, this incident should remind us all to think about every aspect of what we want to accomplish but also what can go completely wrong with a social media promotion.

Current position: Public relations associate at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin

What do you like best about being a professional communicator? The ability to use writing and speaking skills to tell stories.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve had to do for work? I arranged a wedding at the Packers Experience (NFL inflatable games) when I worked for an entertainment management company in Green Bay.

Who do you suggest your fellow chapter members follow on Twitter? #prsawis, of course!

What’s your favorite restaurant in Southeastern Wisconsin? I love so many, but I’m partial to Balistreri’s on Bluemound or Le Rêve Patisserie and Café.

What’s the best vacation you’ve taken? Seeing my favorite band with my friends at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and driving up to Pike’s Peak in Colorado.

Will you win big this year?

Will you win big this year? PRSA Paragon Awards

We know the when (Tuesday, June 3) and the where (the Hilton Milwaukee City Center). Now, WHO will be the big winners at this year’s Paragon Awards? To find that out, we need your entries!

The Paragon Awards honor excellence in public relations work from the Southeastern Wisconsin area. This year’s awards program in early June will honor the winners in each of the 44 unique categories. Entries are split into two main divisions. Program entries include all plans and materials from the inception to the completion of the program. Tactical entries are stand-alone pieces, such as press kits, websites, social media tactics and special events, that support a complete program.

The judging process evaluates all entries based on five criteria:

  • Objectives
  • Research and Planning
  • Execution
  • Budget
  • Results

Entries that achieve a determined score will earn either an Award of Merit or an Award of Excellence. Since entries are scored against criteria, not other entries in the category, there may be more than one winner at each level in each category.

Judges also select a Best in Show recipient from the top-scoring Program entries. This year’s Paragon Awards will be judged by qualified PRSA members from another chapter, allowing for objective and professional evaluation for all entries.

Entries for your exemplary 2013 work are being accepted NOW through Friday, May 2. Be sure to check out the 2014 Paragon Award entry page to learn more about the categories, requirements for entry and to download an entry form and template.
