Unconscious Bias – Knowing What You Don’t Know with Judge Derek Mosley

Unconscious Bias is a learned stereotype that is automatic, unintentional, deeply ingrained, universal, and able to influence behavior. Unconscious bias seeps into decisions that affect recruitment, retention, hiring, access to healthcare, banking, housing, education, the justice system, providing services, interpersonal interactions, and outcomes in ways that can disadvantage both individuals and groups of people. We all have some form of unconscious bias, and the key is to recognize that we have it and employ techniques to mitigate it.
In this session you will:
- Learn to assess and measure your unconscious bias
- Be able to define unconscious bias
- Learn the history of unconscious bias in America
- Learn how subconsciously, decisions are being made in your mind
- Learn how unconscious bias affects everyday life
- Finally, learn ways to mitigate your bias
There will also be opportunities for conversation and reflection during the training.
Derek Mosley graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1995. After graduation he served as an Assistant District Attorney for Milwaukee County from 1995-2002. As an Assistant District Attorney, he represented the State of Wisconsin in over 1,000 criminal prosecutions. In 2002, Mr. Mosley was appointed Municipal Court Judge in Milwaukee. At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest African-American to be appointed judge in the State of Wisconsin. For ten years Mr. Mosley served as the Chief Judge of the Milwaukee Municipal Court. In 2023, Mr. Mosley became the Director of the Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and Civic Education at Marquette University Law School.

For the Republicans: Will Martin is a former candidate for the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor, consults on grassroots organizing, is the Executive Vice President of Columbia Savings and Loan Association and is a member of the Wisconsin Republican Party’s Executive Committee.
For the Democrats: Melissa Baldauff is a senior communications strategist with GPS, a strategic communications and advocacy firm. She also served as County Executive Chris Abele’s communications director and as a communications advisor to Governor Tony Evers.
Panel Moderator: Evan Zeppos is an independent public affairs adviser and a recognized expert in crisis communications and issues management with significant experience in media relations, government affairs, and media training.

The annual event for PR and communications professionals will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Milwaukee Downtown from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
